The most prestigious beauty pageant in the world saw a new queen today as Iris Mittenaere of France was crowned as the 65th Miss Universe at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

What was missing from the finalists, however, was the host country Philippines whose representative, Maxine Medina, only finished in the Top 6. Medina’s answer to the question, “What is the most significant change you've seen in the world in the last 10 years?” was not enough to make her advance to the finals.

A lot of fans, especially in social media, blamed Miss Philippines’ poor answer to the question as the reason why the country did not get a back-to-back win in the beauty pageant.

Medina, despite being given a translator, chose to deliver her answer in English, which many pageant analysts deemed to be her waterloo.

Social media posts were quick to spurt suggesting alternative answers, which could have helped the country take one step closer to a fourth crown.

Comments in JP Mortel Fajura’s post ranged from the advent of the internet and social media and Duterte’s ascent to the country’s presidency and his war on drugs.

For Charise Villaranda Medina should have cited the shift to racism by some people who have become “uncultured and unethical” while Twitter user @jellajoise thought Miss Philippines could have used Haiyan then way Miss Haiti used the earthquake that struck their country.

Gab Lerona, on the other hand, adhered to @TonyoCruz’s take to say that the use of the Filipino language in the pageant for the first time could have been a better answer.

Despite not winning the crown, Maxine Median still made us proud. How would you answer the question if you were her?
