“I will also be applying to become a military officer in the AFP Reserve Force to become the first transgender military officer of the Philippine Republic,” Roman said in a statement.

In a press release dated February 15, Roman commended the AFP for allowing members of the LGBT community to join the army. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

The Inquirer reported that Roman “expressed delight” for the “positive and historic development” and hoped that this will spark the awareness that as a transgender woman, she will don a military woman’s uniform and haircut.

In the same press release, Roman also expressed support towards the proposed revival of the mandatory Reserved Officers Training Course (ROTC) for Grades 11 and 12. She stated that she will “encourage the youth to join and promote the course.”
